09.11.2011

On Lāčplēsis Day, November 11, 2011, Latvijas Pasts will hold a special cancellation event for the envelope issued to commemorate the 75th anniversary of creation of the Brothers' Cemetery memorial ensemble. The event will take place in the post office Sakta, 32 Brīvības Street, Riga, from 7.30 AM to 8 PM.

The envelope dedicated to a memorial ensemble of national significance - the Brothers' Cemetery - has been released with a print run of 1000 copies, and its designer is artist Ģirts Grīva. The envelope depicts photos of the cemetery landscape. The special cancellation is a graphical depiction of the Mother Latvia figure of the cemetery ensemble.

It will also be possible to purchase the special envelope together with the stamps issued in 1992 dedicated to the Brothers' Cemetery memorial ensemble, depicting the figures of soldiers that are part of the cemetery ensemble. The price of the envelope is LVL 0.90.

The Brothers' Cemetery memorial - a cemetery ensemble unique within Europe - was created to commemorate the soldiers who fell in World War I and the Latvian War of Independence (1915-1920). The cemetery contains approximately 2000 burials, including around 200 unknown soldiers. The Brothers' Cemetery is also an outstanding international monument, created by a collaboration of designers - the sculptor Kārlis Zāle, architects Aleksandrs Birzenieks and Pēteris Feders, as well as landscape architect Andrejs Zeidaks, the master gardener of Riga City at that time.

The cemetery ensemble was officially dedicated on November 11, 1936 - Lāčplēša Day. From the main entrance, the 205 meters long avenue of linden trees, also known as the Path of Contemplation, leads to the Terrace of Heroes with an altar of eternal fire. The terrace provides a panorama of the burial ground, ending with the Wall of Latvia and the image of Mother Latvia together with her fallen sons.

The next new philatelic release is planned for December 2.
