Latvijas Pasts dedicates special envelope to 25th anniversary of Environmental Protection Club

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Environmental Protection Club, Latvijas Pasts has released a special envelope depicting the Club's logo and a historical photo from the Prayer at the Sea. The cancellation event for the envelope will take place on February 25, in post office No. 50, shopping mall Origo, 2 Stacijas Square, Riga, from 9 AM to 8 PM.

The envelope was designed by Diāna Ulme, artist and long-time activist of the Club. It depicts the event Prayer at the Sea, organized by the Club in 1988, which gathered around 300,000 people from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The special envelopes will be available for purchase for LVL 0.35; a total of 1,000 envelopes will be released.

The Environmental Protection Club was the first informal public mass organization in the Soviet-occupied Latvia and acted as one of the main driving forces behind the restoration of Latvia's national independence. The Club was founded on 25 February 1987, when nonconformists from all regions of Latvia gathered in Riga. The core of the Club was formed by members of the Monument Protection Centre and the Creative Youth Club, which had already worked for several years for the protection of historical sites, places of worship and the cultural environment of Latvia. Since 1988, the events organized by the Environmental Protection Club grew into massive public demonstrations, for example, against the metro and against migration. The Club also organized the first demonstration in the USSR against the Communist Party. By 1988, the Club already had around 4,000 members in Latvia, and, in addition to 30 chapters in Latvia, chapters were also founded in the USA, United Kingdom, Germany, and France.

The next new philatelic release is planned for March 17.
