Latvijas Pasts releases special envelope dedicated to 25th anniversary of demonstration organized by human rights defense group Helsinki-86

In remembrance of the demonstration organized by the human rights defense group Helsinki-86 twenty-five years ago, Latvijas Pasts has issued a special envelope, whose cancellation event will take place on June 14, from 10 AM to 6 PM, in the administration building of the National Archives of Latvia, 11 Šķūņu Street, Riga. The presentation ceremony with participation of representatives of Helsinki-86, Latvijas Pasts and the archives will be held at 1 PM.

The envelope released by Latvijas Pasts displays a photograph of the historic demonstration at the Freedom Monument on June 14, 1987, taken by the photographer Uldis Briedis. A total of 1000 envelopes will be available.

The demonstration in remembrance of the victims of Stalinism, which was organized by Helsinki-86 on June 14, 1987, at the Freedom Monument, was the first mass event of this kind in the territory of the occupied Republic of Latvia. In commemoration of the deportations of inhabitants of Latvia carried out by the USSR on June 14, 1941, information about the event was spread with the help of the radio programs Voice of America and Free Europe.

Many participants and even bystanders were detained by the Soviet militsiya; the demonstration is considered one of beginning points of the Third Awakening, the Latvian national independence movement.

The human rights defense group Helsinki-86 was founded in 1986.
