LatvijasPasts releases stamp Ungurmuiža as part of popular Palaces of Latvia series

LatvijasPasts has released a new stamp in the Palaces of Latvia series. The new stamp, designed by artist Ģirts Grīva, depicts the Ungurmuiža manor house. The first-day cancellation event will take place on August 18 in the post office Sakta, 32 Brīvības Boulevard, Riga, from 9 AM to 3 PM. The print run of the new release is 100,000 stamps. The denomination of the stamp is LVL 0.98, corresponding to the cost of mailing a registered letter within Latvia.

The stamp is accompanied by a first-day cover depicting a part of the Ungurmuiža wall painting created by the Limbaži painter G.D. Hinšs – a grenadier who until this very day is faithfully guarding the door of his commander. The special cancellation depicts the clock built into the manor’s garret.

Ungurmuiža is the 11th release in the Palaces of Latvia series. The series was commenced by LatvijasPasts in 1999 with the stamp RundālePalace. The palaces of Jelgava, Cesvaine, Jaunmokas, Bīrņi, Jaunpils, Durbe, Stāmeriena, Krustpils, Mežotne and Bauska have also been depicted on stamps.

The Ungurmuiža manor house lies within the territory of the Gauja National Park, in Raiskums parish. It comprises a harmonious complex of 18th century wood buildings, which has an important place among the cultural monuments of Latvia. It was built in 1732 by baron von Campenhausen as a family home, and no other baroque wood buildings have been preserved in Latvia with similarly rich wall paintings.

The next new philatelic release is scheduled for August 23.
