Latvijas Pasts holds special cancellation event to mark 125th birthday of Friedrich Zander

To mark the 125th birthday of the rocket engineer and astronautics theoretician Friedrich Zander, Latvijas Pasts has released a new commemorative stamp and envelope. The first-day cancellation event will take place on August 23 in the post office Sakta, 32 Brīvības Boulevard, Riga, from 7:30 AM to 7:00 PM.

The denomination of the new stamp is LVL 0.60; the print run consists of 30,000 stamps. The stamp was designed by the artist Lilija Dinere, depicting a portrait of the inventor, while the envelope features planets, stars, and a rocket.

Friedrich Zander made an invaluable contribution to astronautics research. As early as in the beginning of the 20th century, Zander began implementing his ideas about spaceflight and designing rockets. He acquired his education at the Riga Polytechnic Institute, and was the head of the Aircraft Association of Riga students. The lunar impact crater Tsander is named after him, as are streets in his native Riga and in Moscow.

Zander was born on 23 August 1887 in Riga and died on 28 March 1933 in Kislovodsk (USSR).

The next new philatelic release is scheduled for September 21.
