Latvijas Pasts to present stamp dedicated to 150th anniversary of Riga Technical University

On Monday, October 8, 2012, in order to mark the 150th anniversary of the Riga Technical University (RTU), Latvijas Pasts will present a stamp dedicated to the university. The first-day cancellation event will take place in the RTU main building, 1 Kaļķu Street, Riga, from 9 AM to 6 PM. The ceremony with participation of representatives of Latvijas Pasts and RTU is scheduled for 11 AM.

Face value of the stamp Riga Technical University - 150, designed by artist Arnis Grinbergs, is LVL 0.98, corresponding to the cost of mailing a registered letter within Latvia. The print run is 100,000 stamps.

The stamp depicts a part of the RTU main building, the university coat of arms, and a student cap in the traditional RTU colors.

The Riga Polytechnicum, the first higher education establishment in the territory of modern-day Latvia, opened its doors on October 14, 1862. It acquired its current name - Riga Technical University - in 1990. The university has eight faculties, and it is the largest technical university in Latvia. RTU currently has almost 15,000 students.

The new stamp Riga Technical University - 150 and the first-day cover can be viewed here.

The next new philatelic release is scheduled for October 18.
