Latvijas Pasts holds special cancellation event to mark 150th birthday of Rūdolfs Blaumanis

On January 5, 2013, Latvijas Pasts will hold a special cancellation event for the envelope issued to mark the 150th anniversary of birth of the prominent Latvian writer Rūdolfs Blaumanis. The event will take place in the post office Sakta, 32 Brīvības Boulevard, Riga, from 9 AM to 3 PM. The special enveloped will be on sale for LVL 0.35.

The envelope dedicated to Rūdolfs Blaumanis has a print run of 1,000 and was designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva. It depicts a portrait of the writer.

Rūdolfs Blaumanis, who was the pioneer of drama and the novella genre in Latvian literature, was born on 1 January 1863. He lived in the Braki homestead of Ērgļi parish, where a museum of the prose writer and playwright is now housed.

The most popular works of Rūdolfs Blaumanis include the novellas Raudupiete, Salna pavasarī, Purva bridējs, Nāves ēnā; the plays Trīnes grēki, Ļaunais gars, Pazudušais dēls, Skroderdienas Silmačos, Indrāni; the poems Tālavas taurētājs, Ziema, Vēl tu nezini, Kā zagšus. The works of the outstanding Latvian writer and playwright have been translated into English, Estonian, Russian, Lithuanian, Finnish, Ukrainian, Hungarian and German. Movies have been filmed based on his works, and music for his poetry has been written by composers such as Alfrēds Kalniņš, Emīls Dārziņš, Emilis Melngailis, Andrejs Jurjāns, Arvīds Žilinskis, Raimonds Pauls and Imants Kalniņš.

Rūdolfs Blaumanis died with tuberculosis in the Takaharju sanatorium in Finland on September 4, 1908. The writer was brought to Latvia and buried in the Ērgļi cemetery.
