Latvijas Pasts to present first stamp with euro and lats denominations

On January 30 Latvijas Pasts will hold the first-day cancellation event and presentation ceremony for the winning stamp of the recent stamp design contest, denominated in both lats and euros. The presentation ceremony will be attended by Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, finance Minister Andris Vilks, transport Minister Aivis Ronis, participants of the London Olympics in the BMX discipline Edžus Treimanis and Rihards Veide, as well as representatives of Latvijas Pastsand the Philatelic Society. The event will take place in post office Sakta, 32 Brīvības Boulevard, Riga.

The new stamp depicts a BMX racer, and its designer Jānis Uzraugs underlines that the stamp is a dedication to Latvian athletes and their achievements. The stamp Dedication to Latvian Athletes is the first to be denominated in both lats and euros - LVL 0.35 and EUR 0.50, respectively - and its print run is 300,000. The design won in a public voting on social networks by obtaining 1,181 votes.

The presentation ceremony with the participation of the Prime Minister, Ministers of transportand finance, representatives of Latvijas Pasts, Olympians and the designer of the winning stamp will be held at 9:00 AM. The first-day cancellation event will take place on January 30 from 7:30 AM to 7:00 PM.

A total of 166 stamp design ideas were submitted for the contest, and judges selected 30 potential new stamp concepts, which were put up for a public vote in the period from October 29 to November 5, 2012. A total of 4,451 votes were cast. The second place in the competition was taken by the stamp Kuldīga with 1,065 votes, and a stamp depicting the Sun ornament placed third with 302 votes.
