Latvijas Pasts releases new stamp dedicated to Dailes Theater

Latvijas Pasts has released a new stamp dedicated to the Dailes Theater as part of the series Contemporary Architecture of Latvia. The first-day cancellation event will take placewill take place on Friday, February 15, 2013in the post centre at Sakta, 32 Brīvības Boulevard, Riga, from 7:30 AM to 7 PM. The denomination of the stamp is LVL 1.00 and EUR 1.42, corresponding to the price of mailing a registered A-class letter within Latvia.

The stamp Dailes Theater was designed by artist Ģirts Grīva, and its print run is 30,000 stamps. The stamp and the first-day cover depict the Dailes Theater building, a striking example of the "international functionalism" architecture of the 1960s in Latvia.

The Dailes Theater is one of the most significant works of post-war modernist architecture in the Baltic region. The theater building is the only major new building for culture events built after World War II in Riga; it was designed by the Latvian architect Marta Staņa, along with Imants Jākobsons and Haralds Kanders.

The building is characterized by large rooms that flow together. The façade of the theater constitutes a glazed foyer stretching along Brīvības Street. Above it is a logo of the theater created by the sculptor Ojārs Feldbergs. The flat roofs of the building are on 14 different levels, their total area almost reaching the size of a football pitch. The theater contains the Large Hall, Small Hall and Chamber Hall.

Latvijas Pasts released the first stamp in the series Contemporary Architecture of Latvia in 2011, depicting the Talsi Sports Hall. In 2012, a stamp was dedicated to the Ventspils Pārventa Library.

The next new philatelic release is scheduled for March 8.
