Latvijas Pasts dedicates stamp to one most important painters of 20th century: Mark Rothko

On Wednesday, September 25, Latvijas Pasts will hold the first day cancellation event and ceremony for the stamp dedicated to the Daugavpils-born world-renowned Jewish painter Mark Rothko. The first day cancellation event will be held in the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center (DMRAC) in 3 Mihaila Street, from 11 AM to 5 PM. The ceremony, which will take place at 12:30 PM, will see the participation of a representative of the management of Latvijas Pasts, Daugavpils City Council Deputy Chairman Jānis Dukšinskis, DMRAC Director Aleksejs Burunovs and the designer of the stamp Līga Čible.

The denomination of the stamp Mark Rothko is LVL 0.60 and EUR 0.85, making it suitable for mailing a regular Class A letter to any country in the world. The print run of the stamp is 30,000, the print run of the first day cover: 1,500.

The stamp designed by artist Līga Čible depicts a portrait of Rothko and the names of the two most important cities in the painter's life: Daugavpils and New York. The first day cover and special cancellation features the logo of the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center, designed in the color field style, which was pioneered by Rothko.

Mark Rothko (1903-1970) is considered one of the central figures in American postwar painting, representing the New York School's abstract expressionism direction together with Barnett Newman and Clyfford Still. The painter was born in Daugavpils, but in 1913 emigrated to the United States with family. Rothko arrived in New York in 1923 and attended courses taught by Max Weber at the Art Students League of New York, learning about Cubism and the work of Paul Cézanne. The works of German Surrealists Max Ernst and Wolfgang Paalen also had a great impact on the painter. The Mark Rothko Art Center in Daugavpils was opened in 2013.
