Latvijas Pasts holds special cancellation event to mark 125th anniversary of Kārlis Zāle

On Monday, October 28, 2013, Latvijas Pasts will hold a special cancellation event for the envelope released to mark the 125th anniversary of the outstanding sculptor Kārlis Zāle. The event will take place in the post office Sakta, 32 Brīvības Boulevard, Riga, from 7:30 AM to 7 PM. The envelope and special cancellation dedicated to Zāle were designed by artist Ģirts Grīva.

The print run of the new envelope is 1,000, and it depicts a portrait of Zāle, while the background features one of the sculptor's works - the Freedom Monument, a symbol of Latvia's independence. The special cancellation depicts Zāle's signature.

Kārlis Zāle was born in 1888 in a family of craftsmen of Liepāja City. He was one of the most prominent sculptors of Latvia whose works are beloved by the Latvian people. The sculptor in collaboration with other artists created the Freedom Monument and the Brothers' Cemetery memorial. Zāle is also the creator of the monument at Sudrabkalniņš dedicated to Latvian soldiers, as well as of several tombstones. One such monument is dedicated to the Latvian poet Andrejs Pumpurs. The sculptor passed away in 1942 and was buried in the Brothers' Cemetery, at the foot of his sculptures.
