Latvijas Pasts holds special cancellation event to mark 100th birthday of children's book author and artist Margarita Stāraste

On February 2, 2014, the 100th birthday of the outstanding children's literature writer and illustrator Margarita Stāraste, Latvijas Pasts will hold a special cancellation event for the envelope dedicated to this anniversary. The event will take place in Riga Post Office No. 50, located in shopping mall Origo, 2 Stacijas Square, from 10 AM to 8 PM.

The envelope Margarita Stāraste - 100 has been designed by artist Ģirts Grīva and is being released with a print run of 1,000. The envelope depicts a portrait of Margarita Stāraste, surrounded by book characters drawn by the beloved author and illustrator, while the special cancellation features Stāraste's autograph. Latvijas Pasts will also congratulate Stāraste personally, presenting to her the framed anniversary envelope.

Margarita Stāraste has written and illustrated around 100 books; her works are mainly related to children's literature. The writer's books have been published since 1942. Her most popular works are Ziemassvētku pasakas (Christmas Tales), Balti, tīri sniega vīri, Zīļuks (Acorn Boy), Pasaku ābece (Fairytale Primer) and Lācīša Rūcīša raibā diena. The adventures of one of Stāraste's favorite characters, Acorn Boy, are familiar not only to Latvian children - the book has been translated in Russian, German, English, Polish, Lithuanian, Czech, and even Japanese, and an animated film has been developed based on the book.

In 1982, Stāraste received the literary award Pastariņa prēmija, and in 1999 the writer was awarded the Order of the Three Stars.

Latvijas Pasts has collaborated with the beloved Latvian writer several times. In 1994, Latvijas Pasts released the stamp block Margarita Stāraste - 80, and its three stamps featuring her book characters were designed by Stāraste herself. In 2004, Stāraste designed the Christmas series stamps released by Latvijas Pasts.
