Nearly 131,000 postcards sent by participants from Latvia within international postcards exchange project Postcrossing

19.05.2014

On May 21, Latvijas Pasts is holding the eighth meeting of Latvian postcrossers within international postcards exchange project Postcrossing. During the meeting, Sandra Lāce, one of the founders of the company Pastkarte and author of ideas and photos for postcards, will provide the audience with the insight into interesting facts about the making of postcards from design to commercial print. Traditionally, the event will allow the Postcrossing participants to share their experiences about the collection of postcards received and to send postcards signed by the event's attendees to recipients all over the world. So far, Latvian postcrossers have sent a total of nearly 131,000 postcards. The event will take place at the creative arts cafe Taka, 10 Miera Street. The meeting starts at 5 PM.

Latvijas Pasts will once again provide the attending postcrossers with the opportunity to send original postcards to unknown pen pals - postcrossers - around the world for free. It will also be possible to cancel the postcards with the special cancellation designed for this international postcards exchange movement. The participants of the event are in for a pleasant surprise from the representatives of the company Pastkarte who are passionate postcrossers. It was participation in the Postcrossing project that encouraged a group of like-minded people to set up a company that produces original postcards permeated with the Latvian spirit.

Latvijas Pasts, which has taken part in Postcrossing since 2010, has received more than 450 unique postcards in less than four years; most cards have arrived from people in the Netherlands, Germany and Russia. The total distance covered by the cards mailed by Latvijas Pasts exceeds 1.5 million kilometers.

The international Postcrossing project involves almost 475,000 people from 213 countries of the world; the number of participants has increased by 34,000 during the last six months. Overall, Postcrossing participants around the globe have received more than 23.5 million postcards. The total distance traveled by the postcards is over 120 billion kilometers.

Today, there are more than 2,500 Postcrossing participants in Latvia who have mailed a total of 130,700 postcards. Thus, Latvia is ranked 30th in the world in terms of the number of cards sent within the project. Germany holds the first place with just under three million postcards sent.

Postcrossing is an interesting combination of modern and traditional features, because by means of the Internet any participant in the project can receive and mail tangible postcards from and to different parts in the world, thus creating a unique collection of postcards. The new participant can send his or her first postcard by getting registered on the website www.postcrossing.com and receiving a postal address. When mailing the card, the sender can be sure that he or she will get at least one postcard in return from a postcrosser who, perhaps, lives halfway around the world. When the postcard has been received, it should be registered on www.postcrossing.com, and the search for the next pen pal can begin.
