Latvijas Pasts to hold first-day cancellation marking 300th anniversary of pastor and linguist Gotthard Friedrich Stender

Latvijas Pasts has released a special stamp to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the pastor and linguist Gotthard Friedrich Stender. The first-day cancellation event will take place in the post office Sakta, 32 Brīvības Boulevard, Riga, on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, from 7:30 AM to 7 PM. The stamp, first-day cover and cancellation have been designed by the artist Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja.

The print run of the stamp dedicated to G.F.Stender is 30,000; its denomination is EUR 1.39, corresponding to the cost of mailing a registered letter within Latvia. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special envelope with a print run of 1,500 copies. The stamp, first-day cover and cancellation feature fragments from A Book of High Wisdom on the World and Nature written by G.F.Stender, a globe and one of the navigation devices described by him.

Gotthard Friedrich Stender, also known as the Old Stenders, was an educated Baltic pastor, linguist and founder of the Latvian secular fiction. His main works include The New and More Complete Latvian Grammar (Neue vollständigere lettische Grammatik), Latvian Lexicon (Lettisches Lexikon), which was the most comprehensive Latvian-German and German-Latvian dictionary for a long time, The New ABC and Reader of a novel type and the first illustrated ABC of Pictures, as well as A Book of High Wisdom on the World and Nature, which was the first popular encyclopedia of science written in Latvian. The Old Stenders was also a professor of geography. He designed globes and described a variety of navigation techniques. Although G.F.Stender was an ethnic German, his tombstone bears the inscription Latwis.

The new stamp Gotthard Friedrich Stender - 300, first-day cover and cancellation can be viewed here.

The next new philatelic release is scheduled for August 28.
