EU House to hold presentation of first Latvijas Pasts stamp of 2015 dedicated to Latvian Presidency of Council of European Union

The first stamp to be released by Latvijas Pasts in 2015 will be dedicated to Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The presentation of the new stamp is scheduled to start at 11 AM on January 6 in the EU House, 28 Aspazijas Boulevard, Riga, and it will be attended by the officials of Latvijas Pasts and the Secretariat of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU. The first-day cancellation event will take place on the same day in the post office Sakta, 32 Brīvības Boulevard, Riga, from 7:30 AM to 7 PM.

The print run of the stamp dedicated to Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU is 200,000 copies and its denomination is EUR 0.64, which is suitable for mailing a regular postcard to any country within the European Union. The stamp has been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva and is based on the official Latvian Presidency logo created by the graphic designer Gunārs Lūsis and featuring an archetypal image of the grinding stone.

The Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU will take place during the first half of 2015. Latvia will take over the Presidency from Italy and pass it to Luxembourg. The Presidency of the Council rotates among the EU member states every six months. The Presidency’s function is to manage the work of the Council. The Presidency is an opportunity for each EU member state, regardless of its size and time of accession to the EU, to chair meetings of the Council and determine its agendas. On February 1, 2012, the Secretariat of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union was established in order to ensure that Latvia prepares, in due time and quality, for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and, within its competence, to coordinate the work during the Presidency.

The Council of the European Union is one of the EU institutions, which exercises authority at the supranational level in those areas where the member states have transferred competence to the EU in accordance with the EU treaties. Only the Council has the power to enter into agreements with third countries and international organizations on behalf of all member states.
