Latvijas Pasts releases first stamps featuring coats of arms with denomination in euro

Latvijas Pasts has released the first stamps since the 1990s that feature the coats of arms of the Republic of Latvia and its capital Riga. Besides, these are the first stamps denominated in the euro within the standard series Coats of Arms of Latvian Towns and Municipalities. The new stamps in the series Coats of Arms can be used to pay for mailings of different value. The first-day cancellation event will take place in the post office Sakta, 32 Brīvības Boulevard, Riga, on January 30, 2015, from 7:30 AM to 7 PM.

The three new stamps will be the first stamps denominated in the euro within the standard series Coats of Arms of Latvian Towns and Municipalities that is primarily aimed at provision of means of paying for mailings of different value. Each new stamp has a different denomination: the stamp with the coat of arms of Riga – € 1, the stamp with the coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia in a silver frame – € 2 and the stamp with the coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia in a gold frame – € 5. The print run of the stamp depicting the coat of arms of Riga is 500,000 copies, while both stamps with the coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia have the print run of 100,000 copies each. The release of the stamps is accompanied by the issue of the first-day cover with the print run of 1,500 copies.

The stamps and the cover have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

The postage stamps featuring the coats of arms of Latvia and Riga were previously released by Latvijas Pasts in the 1990s, shortly after the restoration of the independent statehood of Latvia: the silver and gold framed stamps with the coat of arms of Latvia were issued on October 19, 1991 with a print run of 100,000 copies each, while the coat of arms of Riga was earlier depicted on the stamp released on December 21, 1994 with a print run of two million copies.
