Latvijas Pasts holds special envelope cancellation event to mark 150th anniversary of Latvian literary figure Aspazija

To celebrate the 150th birthday of Aspazija, the outstanding Latvian literary figure, Latvijas Pasts will hold a special cancellation event dedicated to her anniversary. The special cancellation will take place in the post office Sakta, 32 Brīvības Boulevard, Riga, from 7:30 AM to 7 PM.

The print run of the envelope Aspazija – 150 is 1,000, and it has been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva. The envelope depicts a portrait of the popular literary figure Aspazija, while the special cancellation features her autograph.

Aspazija (born Johanna Emīlija Lizete Rozenberga; 1865 – 1943), a poet, playwright and public figure, was an extremely bright and diverse personality who published her first poem in the newspaper The Daily Sheet (Dienas lapa). During her lifetime, Aspazija wrote a number of plays, books of poems and prose works. The play Silver Veil (Sidraba šķidrauts) and the poetry compilation Red Flowers (Sarkanās puķes) are considered the most famous works of this literary artist.

Aspazija’s contribution to Latvian culture was acknowledged by awarding her the Order of Three Stars (1926), Class II Cross of Recognition (1938) and the highest state decoration – the Fatherland Award (1939).

The new envelope Aspazija – 150 and the special cancellation can be viewed here.

The next new philatelic release is scheduled for March 20.
