Latvijas Pasts makes addition to series Republic of Latvia – 100 by releasing three stamps dedicated to Latvian architects

To celebrate the 97th birthday of the Republic of Latvia, Latvijas Pasts has released three new stamps as part of the series Republic of Latvia – 100, which are dedicated to Latvian architects. The first-day cancellation will take place in Riga post office No. 50 located in the shopping mall Origo, 2 Stacijas laukums, Riga, on Friday, November 13, from 8 AM to 7 PM.

The stamps in the series Republic of Latvia – 100 have been designed by the artist Elita Viliama. Each of the three new stamps has a different denomination, and the print run of each stamp is 50,000.

The stamp with a denomination of €0.50 is dedicated to Jānis Frīdrihs Baumanis (1834 – 1891). J.F. Baumanis was the first professional Latvian architect with academic education. He served as a government architect of the Governorate of Livonia (now Vidzeme) and later became a member of the Riga City Council. J.F. Baumanis was also one of the founders of the Union of Riga Artisans, the Riga Latvian Society and the Union of Riga Architects. Furthermore, he was actively involved in organization of, and participation in, the first Latvian Song Festival. J.F. Baumanis designed 17 Orthodox churches that were built in the southern part of Estonia and Vidzeme, as well as more than 150 residential and public buildings that were constructed in Riga.

The denomination of the new stamp depicting J.F.Baumanis corresponds to the cost of mailing a regular Class B letter within Latvia.

The stamp with a denomination of €0.64 depicts the masters of Latvian Art Nouveau: Jānis Alksnis (1869 – 1939), Eižens Laube (1880 – 1967) and Konstantīns Pēkšēns (1859 – 1928). Art Nouveau is a style of art that developed in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. It gave rise to the modern system of styles in architecture. K. Pēkšēns designed more than 250 multi-story houses, as well as a wide range of wooden buildings that were constructed in Riga. J. Alksnis is credited with creating designs for around 130 multi-story stone houses and a variety of wooden buildings in Riga. In turn, E. Laube’s designs were used to build, rebuild or renovate more than 200 buildings in Riga, including around 80 new multi-story stone housing developments.

The stamp devoted to the masters of Art Nouveau is suitable for mailing a regular postcard to any country within the European Union.

The stamp with a denomination of €1.39 portrays Marta Staņa (1918 – 1972), pioneer of modern architecture and legendary personality. The most famous work of M. Staņa is the design of Daile Theater.

The denomination of the stamp dedicated to M. Staņa corresponds to the cost of mailing a registered Class B letter within Latvia.
