Latvijas Pasts releases new stamp January Barricades – 25

Latvijas Pasts makes the first new philatelic release of this year, issuing a stamp and cover dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the January Barricades. The first-day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled for January 13, 2016 in the National Archives of Latvia at 11 Šķūņu Street, Riga, from 9 AM to 6 PM.

The denomination of the new stamp is €0.54 and its print run is 200,000 copies. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,500 copies. The new philatelic release has been designed by the artist Ludis Danilāns. The stamps have been printed at Baltic Banknote printing house in Latvia.

The cancellation of the stamp January Barricades – 25 will be part of the commemorative event dedicated to the Barricades and held in the National Archives of Latvia. From 9 AM to 6 PM on January 13, the National Archives of Latvia will host a demonstration of documentary photos as historical evidence of the Barricades in Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn back in 1991.

The Barricades that were built and protected from January 13 to January 27, 1991 were a means of non-violent resistance during Atmoda (Latvian National Awakening). The Barricades were set up in the Old Town of Riga and around the most important strategic sites to protect them from a possible attack of the Soviet forces. On the morning of January 13, after the Soviet troops attacked the defenders of the Vilnius TV Tower, an announcement from the Latvian Popular Front leaders Dainis Īvāns and Romualds Ražuks was broadcast by Latvian radio calling people to gather for protest demonstrations. Unarmed people from many Latvian cities went to join others at the Barricades.

The next new philatelic release is scheduled for 29 January 2016.
