Latvijas Pasts releases stamp block dedicated to 150th anniversary year of Janis Rozentāls

The first-day cancellation of the stamp block Janis Rozentāls – 150 is to be held at Janis Rozentāls Saldus Museum of History and Art, 22 Striķu Street, Saldus, from 9 AM to 5 PM on March 18, 2016. A special presentation event in honor of the stamp block dedicated to Janis Rozentāls, which is scheduled to start at 12:00 PM, will see the participation of the representatives of Latvijas Pasts, Janis Rozentāls Saldus Museum of History and Art and Saldus Municipality Council

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Janis Rozentāls, Latvijas Pasts has released a stamp block with two new stamps. The denomination of each stamp is €0.50 and the print run of the block is 30,000 copies. The release of the stamps is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,500 copies. The stamps and the cover have been designed by the artist Lilija Dinere. The stamps have been printed at Baltic Banknote printing house in Latvia.

The first-day cancellation of the new block of stamps will take place at Janis Rozentāls Saldus Museum of History and Art from 9 AM to 5 PM on March 18, while a special presentation dedicated to the stamp block Janis Rozentāls – 150 will start at 12:00 PM. The event will be attended by Latvijas Pasts Chairman of the Board Arnis Salnājs, designer of the stamps, artist Lilija Dinere, Director of Janis Rozentāls Saldus Museum of History and Art Agrita Ozoliņa and a representative of Saldus Municipality Council. Following the special event, the attendees are welcome to view the exhibits of Janis Rozentāls Saldus Museum of History and Art.

The visual design of the stamp block and the cover is based on the pictorial reproduction of J. Rozentāls’ works of art to be found in the collection of the Latvian National Museum of Art: Temptation (Kārdināšana) (circa 1901), Temptation (Kārdināšana) (1913), the drop curtain design for the theatrical presentation of Aspazija’s play Vaidelote (circa 1909) and Daughters of Sun (Saules meitas) (circa 1912). Materials from the collection of the Information Center of the Art Academy of Latvia have also been used. 

In Latvia, 2016 is the Year of Janis Rozentāls. The 150th anniversary of Janis Rozentāls is celebrated with an extensive and varied program across Latvia throughout 2016. J.Rozentāls is one of the founding fathers of the national school of painting and one of the Baltic art modernizers, who at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries brought Latvian professional art closer to the European level. UNESCO has included the artists’s anniversary in the calendar of celebrations.
