Latvijas Pasts releases two new stamps in Birds series: one with Latvia’s Bird of Year 2016 great spotted woodpecker and another with Eurasian pygmy owl

Latvijas Pasts has released two new additions to Latvian Birds series of stamps, one featuring the great spotted woodpecker, Latvia’s Bird of the Year 2016, and the other depicting the Eurasian pygmy owl, the smallest owl to be found in Latvia. The first-day cancellation of the stamps is scheduled for 20 May 2016 in Riga post office No. 50 located in the shopping mall Origo, 2 Stacijas laukums, Riga, from 8 AM to 8 PM.

The new stamps have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva and each has a print run of 200,000 copies. The denomination of the stamp featuring the great spotted woodpecker is EUR 1.71, which corresponds to the cost of mailing a registered letter to any country in the European Union, while the denomination of the stamp dedicated to the Eurasian pygmy owl is EUR 0.71, suitable for mailing a regular letter to any country in the European Union. The release of the stamps is accompanied by the issue of two special envelopes depicting both birds, with a print run of 1,500 copies each.

The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), which has been given the title of Latvia’s Bird of the Year 2016, can be found in various forests and is the most common of the nine woodpecker species in Latvia. The great spotted woodpecker is one of the forest umbrella species, because cavities hollowed out by it can be used not only for its own nest, but afterwards also for other bird species, such as tits, or other animals.

The Eurasian pygmy owl (Glaucidium passerinum) is a special member of the owl family: it is the smallest owl species found in Latvia and Europe, which is characterized by changes in daily activities, that is to say, the most expressive vocal activity of the species is observed between the morning and the evening twilight, while around midday it is less marked.

Latvijas Pasts has issued the Birds series of stamps since 2010, releasing two new stamps per year. Last year, Latvijas Pasts released the stamps depicting the European golden plover and the Eurasian golden oriole. The stamps released in the Birds series can be viewed here here.

The new stamps Great Spotted Woodpecker and Eurasian Pygmy Owl, the first-day covers and the cancellation are available for viewing here.

The next new philatelic release is scheduled for June 14.
