Latvijas Pasts releases stamp block in memory of mass deportations of June 14, 1941 and 75th anniversary of Litene’s tragedy

Latvijas Pasts has issued a block of two stamps and a special cover dedicated to mass deportations of Latvia’s people on June 14, 1941 and to pay the tribute to the memory of the army officers who fell victim to Litene’s tragedy. The first-day cancellation of the stamp block and the cover is to be held at the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, 7 Raiņa bulvāris, Riga from 10 AM to 5 PM on June 14, 2016. A special presentation of the stamps, which will take place at the museum at 11 AM, will see the participation of the representatives of Latvijas Pasts and the museum.

The print run of the stamp block is 30,000 copies and the denomination of each stamp is €0.50, corresponding to the cost of mailing a regular Class B letter within Latvia. The special commemorative cover has a print run of 1,500 copies. The stamps and the cover have been designed by Arta Ozola Jaunarāja.

The stamp block has been created to commemorate the mass deportations of June 14, 1941 and the 75th anniversary of Litene’s officers tragedy. One of the stamps in the block is dedicated to more than 15,000 Latvia’s people who were deported from the occupied Latvia to Siberia on June 14, 1941 by the Soviet occupation regime. The other stamp has been released in memory of the officers of the Latvian army who were arrested in Litene on the same day. Most of them were deported, imprisoned in Gulag forced labor camps or shot.

The stamp block and the cover dedicated to the mass deportations of June 14, 1941 and the anniversary of Litene’s tragedy can be viewed here.

The next new philatelic release is scheduled for 15 July 2016.
