The stamp Biķernieki Racetrack – 50 to be presented during a special event in the Biķernieki Complex Sports Base

Latvijas Pasts to mark the 50th anniversary of the Biķernieki Complex Sports Base for the first time issued a new stamp in connection with sports infrastructure and motorsport development in Latvia. The presentation and the first day cancellation of the stamp will take place in the Biķernieki Complex Sports Base at 4 Sergeja Eizenšteina Street, Riga. The official presentation of the stamp with the participation of the representatives of the management of Latvijas Pasts, the Road Traffic Safety Directorate and the Biķernieki Complex Sports Base will be held in the sports complex at 1 AM. The first day cancellation of the stamp in the sports base will take place from 9 AM to 6 PM.

Biķernieku county children with special greeting to the Biķernieku track will also attend the official presentation of the stamp.

The print run of the new stamp is 200,000 copies and its face value is €0.57, which corresponds to the cost of mailing a regular Class A letter within Latvia. The print run of the special cover is 1,500 copies. The new philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

The Biķernieki Complex Sports Base featured on the stamp and the cover is the largest sports centre of its kind in the Baltics. The complex sports base combines a total of six racetracks of different size and surface and is designed for car races, motorcycle races, bicycle races, drag races, drift races, speedway and other racing competitions.

50 years ago motorcycle racers opened the first stage of the Biķernieki Complex Sports Base, and a motorcycle mastery competition in the circuit was also held in honour of that event. In July 2016 the newly built 1,294-metre long rallycross track was inaugurated. In October this year it will become the venue for the hitherto highest level motor racing competitions in Latvia: Round 10 of Neste World RX of Latvia of the World Rallycross Championship organised by the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

The stamp and the cover Biķernieki Racetrack – 50 are available for viewing here

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 12th September.
