Latvijas Pasts releases a special cover dedicated to the centenary of the Latvian War Museum

Latvijas Pasts has released a special cover dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Latvian War Museum. The special cancellation of the cover will take place in the Latvian War Museum at 20 Smilšu Street, Riga from 10 AM to 6 PM on the 15th of September 2016.

The print run of the new cover Latvian War Museum – 100 is 1,000 copies and it depicts the ancient fortification tower of Riga, the Powder Tower, which is home to the Latvian War Museum. The cover has been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

The Latvian War Museum dates back to the events of World War I in the territory of Latvia and to the establishment of the national military units – the Latvian Riflemen Battalions as part of the Tsarist Russian Army in 1915. In September 1916 the current War Museum started its operation as the Riflemen Museum.

The construction of the annex of the Powder Tower was launched in 1937 and completed in 1940. The museum, however, did not manage to expand its activities in the new premises, because Latvia was occupied by the USSR on the 17th of June 1940. The Latvian War Museum was closed along with the liquidation of the Latvian state institutions.

The Latvian War Museum resumed its operation in 1990, after the start of the process of the restoration of Latvia's independence.

The special cover Latvian War Museum – 100 can be viewed here.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 18th of September.
