Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp to mark the 25th anniversary of Latvia’s accession to the UN

This autumn marks the 25th anniversary of Latvia’s accession to the United Nations (the UN). In honour of this event Latvijas Pasts has released a new stamp and a special cover. The first day cancellation of the stamp will take place in Riga post office No. 50 located in the shopping mall Origo, 2 Stacijas laukums, from 10 AM to 7 PM on Sunday, the 18th of September.

The print run of the stamp is 100,000 copies and its face value is € 0.54, which corresponds to the cost of sending a ordinary Class B letter within Latvia. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,500 copies. The new philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Ludis Danilāns.

The new stamp depicts the UN headquarters located in New York, the United States.

The UN was founded in 1945 to maintain international peace and security, to develop friendly relations among nations, to achieve international cooperation and to be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations. Currently the UN comprises 193 Member States.

Latvia has been a member of the UN since the 17th of September 1991. Participation and advocacy of the country’s national interests in the UN and its system organizations is ensured by permanent missions of Latvia to the UN in New York, Geneva and Vienna, to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and to the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Currently Latvia has been elected as a member to the UN Human Rights Council, the UN Statistical Commission and the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development.
