Latvijas Pasts releases a commemorative stamp to mark the 175th anniversary of Andrejs Pumpurs

Latvijas Pasts has released a new stamp and a cover in honour of the 175th anniversary of Andrejs Pumpurs, one of the greatest Latvian poets of the 19th century. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in Misiņš Library at 10 Rūpniecības Street, Riga, from 8:30 AM to 6 PM on the 22nd of September 2016, which is the day when the poet was born. The presentation of the stamp with the participation of the representatives of the management of Latvijas Pasts and Misiņš Library will be held in the library at 11 AM.

The print run of the new stamp is 100,000 copies and its face value is €1.41, which corresponds to the cost of sending a registered Class B letter within Latvia. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,500 copies.

The stamp and the cover have been designed by the artist Lilija Dinere who has evoked the atmosphere of Romanticism – the dominant artistic and literary movement of the 19th century – in the stamp. The stamp depicts a portrait of A.Pumpurs, a fragment of the Freedom Monument featuring the folk hero Lāčplēsis and Koknese Castle ruins, in the vicinity of which the poet lived when his most popular work, the epic poem Lāčplēsis, was created.

A.Pumpurs is one of the brightest personalities in the history of Latvian culture, a renowned poet of the 19th century and an outstanding representative of Folk Romanticism. The most famous work by A.Pumpurs is the epic poem Lāčplēsis based on Latvian folk songs, legends and tales.

The stamp and the cover Andrejs Pumpurs – 175 are available for viewing here

The next new philatelic release is scheduled for the 7th of October.
