Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp and a cover dedicated to the oldest lighthouse in Latvia – Ovīši Lighthouse

Latvijas Pasts has issued the eleventh stamp in honour of Latvian lighthouses, and the new release in the series is dedicated to the oldest lighthouse in Latvia, which is Ovīši Lighthouse. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in Riga post office No. 50 located in the shopping mall Origo, 2 Stacijas laukums, from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM on the 7th of October 2016.

The print run of the new stamp is 100,000 copies and its face value is € 0.90, which corresponds to the cost of sending a regular Class A letter within the European Union. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,500 copies. The new philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja.

Ovīši Lighthouse is located on Cape Ovīši in Tārgale Parish, Ventspils Municipality, at a distance of 360 metres from the coastline of the Baltic Sea. The lighthouse was opened in 1814, and it is the oldest functioning lighthouse in Latvia today, which has also been placed on the statutory list of protected cultural monuments. The height of the stone masonry tower is 38 metres and its diameter is 11.5 metres. Inside this tower there is another tower with a diameter of 3.5 metres. The light signal of the lighthouse can be seen 15 nautical miles away. At present the base of the lighthouse offers an exhibition devoted to the history of lighthouses in Latvia.
