Latvijas Pasts releases a special cover dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the founder of Latvian professional photography Mārtiņš Buclers

Latvijas Pasts has released a special cover in honour of the 150th anniversary of Mārtiņš Buclers, the founder of Latvian professional photography. The special cancellation of the cover will take place right on the photographer’s birthday, the 12th of December, in the Latvian Museum of Photography at 8 Mārstaļu Street, Riga, from 9 AM to 5 PM.

The print run of the new cover Mārtiņš Buclers – 150 is 1,000 copies, and it has been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva. The cover depicts a portrait of M.Buclers and a pocket camera with a text fragment from the textbook Fotogrāfija (Photography) published by the photographer.

M.Buclers (1866–1944) was a remarkable Latvian photographer, photo manufacturer and publisher, and he is considered the founding father of professional photography in Latvia. M.Buclers began his basic training in the trade of photography in 1894 and three years later he received his trade certificate, which allowed him to engage in photography. In 1897 he opened his own photography studio in Sigulda.

In 1904 Buclers also published the textbook Fotogrāfija, which was the first book about photography in Latvian. Later, in 1906, M.Buclers founded the Latvian Photographic Association and started publishing the magazine Stari (Rays), which was dedicated to literature and art and included a separate section allocated to photography.

Furthermore, M.Buclers issued postcards and engaged in folklore collection: he wrote down the texts and melodies of folk songs that were sent to Krišjānis Barons for the purposes of creating the Latvian folk songs edition Latvju dainas.
