Special cancellation of the cover dedicated to the centenary of the outstanding actress Elza Radziņa to be held in the National Theatre

Latvijas Pasts releases a special cover in honour of the 100th anniversary of Elza Radziņa, an outstanding Latvian theatre and film actress of the 20th century. The special cancellation of the cover will take place in the Latvian National Theatre at 2 Kronvalda bulvāris, Riga, from 10 AM to 6 PM on the 10th of February 2017.

The print run of the cover Elza Radziņa – 100 is 1,000 copies, and it has been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva. The cover depicts a portrait of E.Radziņa as well as symbols of the theatre and film art, pointing to the actress’ close relationship with the two artistic fields. The National Theatre has been chosen as the venue for the cancellation of the new cover, considering that the actress, who was often called the queen of the stage because of the roles she played, worked there from 1954.

E.Radziņa (the 10th of February 1917 – the 18th of August 2005) was born in Kharkiv, a city in Ukraine, and in 1921 she moved with her family to Jelgava where she graduated from Jelgava Duke Peter Gymnasium in 1936 and took part in the play Skroderdienas Silmačos (Tailor Days in Silmači) by Jelgava Latvian Theatre. From 1954 E.Radziņa continuously worked in what is now the Latvian National Theatre.

The actress’ most prominent theatrical roles include the title role in the play Filumena Marturano (1958, directed by Alfreds Jaunušāns) and the role of Stella Campbell in Dear Liar (1962, directed by Žanis Katlaps), which marked the beginning of her long-term cooperation with the actor Kārlis Sebris, another legend of Latvian theatre and cinema.

E.Radziņa attained international fame with the role of Hamlet’s mother Gertrude in the film Hamlet (1964) by the ex-USSR director Grigori Kozintsev, which was nominated for a Golden Globe Award as Best Foreign Language Film 1966. E.Radziņa’s first major screen appearance in Riga Film Studio was the role of Madame Horst in the film Purva bridējs (The Swamp Wader) (1966) by Leonīds Leimanis. Overall E.Radziņa had several dozens of various screen appearances in films.

E.Radziņa was awarded the Order of Three Stars and received the Spīdola Award of the Latvian Cultural Foundation and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Lielais Kristaps National Film Festival. She was an Honorary Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences and an Honorary Citizen of Jelgava.
