Voting for the new stamp design within the contest My Family – Superteam starts in social networks

Today, the 7th of April, marks the start of voting for the design sketches on the subject My Family – Superteam, submitted for the new stamp design contest. The voting is being held in social networks. Until the 17th of April, any social network user may log in on the website http://jaunapastmarka.lv/ with their Twitter, Facebook or Draugiem account and vote for any of the 20 stamp design sketches shortlisted for the contest finals by the jury. The name of the author whose stamp will have received the most votes will be revealed on the 18th of April, and the winning stamp will be released with a print run of 500,000 copies as early as on the 15th of May, the International Day of Families.

A total of 227 stamp design sketches have been submitted for the sixth Latvijas Pasts new stamp design contest, which is being held this year in collaboration with the parents’ organisation Mammamuntetiem.lv. The members of the professional jury, composed of experts in graphic design, philately and family matters, have shortlisted 20 entries for the final vote within the contest.

Inga Akmentiņa-Smildziņa, manager of Mammamuntetiem.lv and member of the jury, shares her observations in regard to the assessment of the entries sent in for the contest: “It is encouraging that so many contestants view the family in their works in a broader context. Can we actually say that a family consists only of a mum, dad and two or three children? A family also includes a grandma, dad’s brother and distantly related aunt with whom a sincere and loving relationship is shared. A family is also a single father with a child or a single mother with a child, or a loving man and woman without children.”

One Twitter, Facebook or Draugiem account can be used to vote for different stamps on the website http://jaunapastmarka.lv/, but only one vote may be cast for a stamp from a particular account per day. The voting will continue until the 17th of April and the winner will be revealed to the public on the 18th of April. The release of the new stamp with a print run of half a million copies is scheduled for the 15th of May, the International Day of Families, when the presentation of the stamp will take place as well. The winner of the contest will also receive a prize – a GoPro Hero 5 Session camera – that will be useful for eternalising the joint adventures of his or her family.

The stamp design contest has become a well-established tradition of Latvijas Pasts, inviting anyone interested to get involved in the creation of a new stamp. This opportunity is offered only once a year, as the rest of the time the stamp releases are planned by the special Stamp Issue Committee.

The stamp designed by Toms Rutkovskis won the previous contest held by Latvijas Pasts in 2016 in collaboration with the legendary bicycle brand Ērenpreiss. It received 1,952 votes. A total of 9,097 votes were cast in social networks for the stamps shortlisted for the contest finals.

Solvita Kukle’s stamp Singing Trees won with 6,385 votes in the contest held by Latvijas Pasts in collaboration with TV3 on the topic of Latvia’s Pride in 2014. The winning stamp of 2013 was Imants Ziedonis Will Bloom Eternally created by Anda Pētersone, while the winning stamp of 2012 was designed by Jānis Uzraugs and depicted a BMX racer. The winner of the 2011 contest was Evita Eidinta with the stamp The Place Where Stories Are Born.
