Latvijas Pasts launches a new cycle of stamps in the series Latvian Animals – the first issue depicts the European badger, Latvia’s Animal of the Year 2016

Starting a new cycle of stamps in the series Latvian Animals, Latvijas Pasts has released a stamp depicting the European badger (Meles meles), Latvia’s Animal of the Year 2016. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in Riga post office No. 50 located in the shopping centre Origo, 2 Stacijas laukums, Riga from 8 AM to 7 PM on Friday, the 16th of June 2017.

The face value of the stamp European Badger is €0.85, which corresponds to the cost of sending a regular Class A letter to any country of the world outside the European Union. The print run of the stamp is 150,000 copies, and it is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,500 copies. The stamp and the cover have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

The European badger (Meles meles), which was chosen as Latvia’s Animal of the Year 2016, is one of the largest carnivorous animals in the family Mustelidae in this country. The badger is an easily recognisable and attractive animal whose image is frequently used in various literary and visual works due to its distinctive appearance. Badgers may have a different colour of the coat, ranging from reddish to more greyish, white the white and black colouration of the head is likely to be a sign warning other species against approaching.

Latvijas Pasts already previously issued a series of stamps Latvian Animals: the stamps released in 2006 depicted the deer and the lynx, the stamps of 2007 featured the fox and the moose, the stamps of 2008 were dedicated to the marten and beaver, while the closing stamps in the series portrayed the hare and the wolf. The stamps in the new animal series are intended to be created based on a different artistic design principle.
