Latvijas Pasts releases a special cover to mark the centennial of the Latvian Scout Movement

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Latvian Scout Movement, Latvijas Pasts has released a special cover. The official cancellation of the cover is scheduled to take place at the Latvian Scout and Guide Jamboree Centennial Bonfire (Simtgades ugunskurs) in Ezernieki, Indrāni Parish, Lubāna Municipality, on Friday, the 11th of August 2017 from 1 PM to 6 PM.

The print run of the cover Scouting in Latvia – 100 is 1,000 copies, and it has been designed by the artist Ludis Danilāns. The design of the cover incorporates the symbol of the centennial of scouting – a bonfire, which figuratively represents the place where scouts gather together.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the arrival of scouting to Latvia when the first Scout groups started to form in 1917. The centennial will be celebrated from the 6th to the 12th of August at the Jamboree Centennial Bonfire, and it will be the biggest Latvian scout jamboree of the past 15 years that will bring together around 450 participants not only from Latvia but also from other countries of the world.

Scouting and guiding is a movement for informal education of young people aimed at developing their physical and mental skills – the need to explore and discover and the desire to learn. Currently there are about 800 active scouts and guides in Latvia. The Latvian Scout and Guide Central Organisation is a member of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).

The cover dedicated to Latvian scouts can be viewed here.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 18th of August 2017.
