Latvijas Pasts releases a special stamp and a cover to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the poet Eduards Veidenbaums

Latvijas Pasts has released a new stamp and a cover in honour of the 150th anniversary of Eduards Veidenbaums, one of the most prominent Latvian poets. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in Riga post office No. 50 located in the shopping mall Origo, 2 Stacijas laukums, from 8 AM to 7 PM on the 3rd of October 2017, which is the poet’s birthday.

The print run of the new stamp is 200,000 copies and its face value is €0.57, which corresponds to the cost of sending a Class A letter within Latvia. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,500 copies. The stamp and the cover have been designed by the artist Lilija Dinere: the stamp depicts a portrait of the poet, while the envelope features lines from Kā gulbji balti padebeši iet (Following the Swan Flock of Clouds), one of the most famous poems by E.Veidenbaums, in the handwriting of the poet himself.

E.Veidenbaums (1867–1892) is one of the most prominent personalities of Latvian poetry, whose life after death has overgrown with various legends. Having died before he turned 25, E.Veidenbaums left a significant literary heritage. What is more, his poetry has not lost its topicality even nowadays and is often used in song lyrics.

During the poet’s life his poems were not published and were distributed in handwriting, gaining particular popularity during the revolution of 1905. E.Veidenbaums also worked as a translator from Latin, French, German, Russian and other languages.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 6th of October.
