Latvijas Pasts releases three new postage stamps in the stamp series dedicated to the centenary of Latvia. The new stamps highlight the performance of the scientists important for Latvia and their achievements in three areas: medicine, chemistry and astrophysics. The first day cancellation of the new stamps is scheduled to take place at the premises of the Latvia 100 Information Centre in the National Library of Latvia at 3 Mūkusalas Street, from 10 AM to 7 PM on the 3rd of November 2017.
In preparation for the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Latvia in 2018, Latvijas Pasts has issued the already ninth three-stamp release in the series Republic of Latvia – 100, devoting it to Latvian science and prominent scientists. Each of the three new stamps has a different face value, and the print run of each stamp is 80,000 copies. The release of the stamps is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,500 copies. The stamps and the cover have been designed by the artist Elita Viliama.
The stamp with a face value of € 0.50 features pioneers of astrophysics Fridrihs Canders (1887–1933), Kārlis Šteins (1911–1983), Jānis Ikaunieks (1912–1969) and Arturs Balklavs (1933–2005). The face value of the stamp dedicated to the astrophysicists is suitable for sending a regular Class B letter within Latvia.
The stamp with a face value of € 0.57 depicts three notable Latvian physicians: surgeon, oncologist and academician Pauls Stradiņš (1896–1958), surgeon and academician Viktors Kalnbērzs (1928) and founding father of the modern heart surgery in Latvia Romāns Lācis (1946). The face value of the stamp devoted to the legends of medicine corresponds to the cost of sending a regular Class A letter within Latvia.
In turn, the stamp with a face value of € 1.42 portrays the most outstanding Latvian chemists: Vilhelms Ostvalds (1853–1932), Pauls Valdens (1863–1957) and Jānis Stradiņš (1933). The face value of the stamp depicting the chemistry scientists corresponds to the cost of sending a registered Class A letter within Latvia.

The series of stamps Republic of Latvia – 100 was launched in 2009 in preparation for the centenary of the Republic of Latvia. The three new stamps that are issued as part of this series every year are dedicated to the events or personalities significant to Latvia: the origins of the establishment of the statehood of Latvia, its national symbols, history of writing, seafaring, music, fine arts and architecture, as well as sports legends.
