Stamps of 2018 will be dedicated to the Olympic Games, Latvia’s Centenary Song Festival and Curonian Kings

In 2018 Latvijas Pasts plans to make 17 new stamp releases – a total of 25 stamps and one stamp block – dedicating them to significant events and personalities of Latvia in the broadest range of areas. The stamps will perpetuate the most important event of the next year – the centenary of the Latvian State. The new philatelic releases will also be issued in connection with the XXIII Olympic Winter Games and the 150th anniversary of the Riga Latvian Society. For the first time Latvijas Pasts will make a joint stamp release in cooperation with the Bank of Latvia.

In 2018 Latvijas Pasts plans to issue both traditional stamp series and create new unique stamp designs. The first stamps of the new year will be issued in January, continuing the series Coats of Arms of Latvian Towns and Municipalities. In February the stamp will be dedicated to the start of the Latvian Olympic athletes in the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in the South Korean city of PyeongChang, while the release of new additional stamps is planned after the games in the event that the Latvian athletes win Olympic medals.

The stamps in honour of the centenary of the Latvian State will be the final releases in the special stamp series Republic of Latvia – 100, which has been issued since 2008. The stamps will be dedicated to the tradition of the Latvian Song and Dance Festival and will be issued in June 2018 before the major celebrations of the centenary.

Among the most original new stamps of the next year we should mention the joint stamp release dedicated to Curonian Kings, which Latvijas Pasts will create for the first time in cooperation with the Bank of Latvia. The stamp block in the series Outstanding Latvian Artists will be issued to commemorate Ansis Cīrulis (1883-1942), a Latvian graphic artist, painter and applied art professional, who is the author of both Latvian national flag standard design and the design of the first postage stamp of the Republic of Latvia that was issued in 1918.

The new stamp release in October will be dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Riga Latvian Society.

In 2017 Latvijas Pasts released 26 stamps and two stamp blocks, with their total print run amounting to 6.5 million copies. All stamps issued in 2017 can be viewed here.
