Latvijas Pasts and the news portal Delfi call on everyone for the second time to vote for the most beautiful stamp of the previous year

This is the second time that Latvijas Pasts in collaboration with the news portal Delfi call on all people of Latvia to cast their vote for the most beautiful stamp of the past year. In 2017 Latvijas Pasts released 26 stamps and two stamp blocks dedicated to a variety of personalities and events of importance for Latvia, with their total print run amounting to 6.5 million copies. The voting for the stamps is held in the section Gada pastmarka 2017 (Stamp of the Year 2017) on the portal Delfi. The voting will close at 11:59 PM on the 29th of January.

Postage stamps are valuable elements, which are used to pay for postal items and as collectible items, while also being national recognition symbols at the same time. Postal establishments throughout the world apply special criteria when deciding on the specific themes to depict on the stamps. In the case of Latvia these are events and personalities of significance for the state, as well as anniversaries, jubilees and commemorations related to them.

In 2017 Latvijas Pasts continued to release both traditional series of stamps and also issued currently topical stamps, taking into account important events during the year. Among the already well-known series of stamps are Coats of Arms of Latvian Towns and Municipalities, where last year’s stamps were devoted to Olaine, Mālpils and Roja Municipalities, Flowers Freesia, Outstanding Latvian ArtistsJānis Tīdemanis, Latvian BirdsWestern Yellow Wagtail and Little Crake, Lighthouses of LatviaRoja Lighthouse and Christmas featuring motifs from Alberts Kronenbergs’ works. The series commemorating the Centenary of Latvia featured the ninth – the last but one – stamp in the series, which was issued last year to commemorate outstanding Latvian scientists.

To mark the great achievements of the most famous Latvian tennis player Aļona Ostapenko – her victory in the 2017 French Open Singles Tournament and the 2017 WTA (Women's Tennis Association) International Tournaments in Seoul, a stamp block was devoted to the young athlete, launching the new series of stamps.

The release dedicated to the 11th World Floorball Championships was selected as the most favourite stamp of 2016 as a result of the people’s voting on the portal Delfi. The winners of the second and third places were the stamps related to the ornithological theme.

Voting within the competition for the most beautiful stamp of 2017 is possible for any stamp from one computer once a day.
