Latvijas Pasts releases the first irregularly shaped stamp in the form of the map of Latvia

To mark the centenary of the Latvian state, Latvijas Pasts issues a special stamp Flag – Map of Latvia. This is the first stamp of irregular shape released in Latvia, and it is designed as an outline of the map of Latvia. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place at the National Library of Latvia at 3 Mūkusalas Street, Riga, from 10 AM to 5 PM on the 9th of March 2018. The presentation of the stamp will be held in the same place at 10 AM and it will see the participation of the representatives of the Ministry of Transport, Latvijas Pasts, the Ministry of Culture, the National Library of Latvia and Office Latvia 100.

Marking the centenary of the Latvian state, Latvijas Pasts releases a special stamp Flag – Map of Latvia. The face value of the stamp is € 0.50, which corresponds to the cost of sending a regular Class B letter within Latvia. Unlike most stamps, the stamp symbolising the outline of Latvia has a self-adhesive base. The print run of the stamp is one million copies. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,000 copies. This philatelic release has been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

The new stamp is the first stamp of irregular shape issued by Latvijas Pasts: in honour of the anniversary of the state it is designed as the map of Latvia and incorporates the motif of the national flag of Latvia. The national flag of Latvia is also featured on the special cover, which is supplemented by the visual image of the Latvian state’s centenary: the sign that affirms the fellowship with the celebration of the centenary.

“Irregularly shaped stamps are rare in the world, and we assume that the release by Latvijas Pasts may become a unique value over time. The new stamp is a tribute to the Latvian state, combining two symbols: the silhouette of the country’s territory and the flag,” Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, points out.

This year Latvijas Pasts plans to make some more releases dedicated to the centenary of the state.
