Latvijas Pasts issues a stamp dedicated to The Garden of Destiny

Latvijas Pasts has issued a new stamp The Garden of Destiny - People's Gift to Latvia. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place on Friday, the 18th of May, 2018 at The Garden of Destiny, Koknese, from 10 AM till 5 PM. The official presentation of the stamp, however, will be held at 11 AM with the participation of representatives from Latvijas Pasts, Kokneses Fonds and Koknese Municipality Council.

The stamp of The Garden of Destiny has been issued with a print run of 80,000 copies and its face value is € 0.61, which corresponds to the cost of sending a regular Class A letter within the territory of Latvia. The stamp has been designed by Arvils Feldmanis, and its visual design features a photograph of the aerophotographer Gatis Balodis. The stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with the print run of 1000 copies, the design author of which is the artist Girts Griva (Ģirts Grīva).

The Chair of the Board of Latvijas Pasts, Marcis Vilcans (Mārcis Vilcāns) emphasizes that the stamp issued for The Garden of Destiny is yet another tribute from Latvijas Pasts during the country's centenary. “We are leaving another everlasting story about Latvia and our people for both the next generations and the world society, on a Latvia state bond - a postage stamp.”

The author of the idea of The Garden of Destiny, Vilis Vitols (Vilis Vītols) comments: "Latvijas Pasts has supported The Garden of Destiny since 2009. During its initial formation years it was possible to donate towards The Garden of Destiny by purchasing donation tickets in the post offices of Latvijas Pasts, the idea of which was taken by Kokneses Fonds from the donation initiative to the Freedom Monument. Today - in Latvia's centennial year - the stamp of The Garden of Destiny is issued depicting the amphitheatre on the bank of river Daugava in its centre. We are very happy and content about this event."

The stamp depicts the heart of The Garden of Destiny - the amphitheatre - which symbolically separates the past and the future sections of the Garden. The amphitheatre is encircled by a massive stone formation The Silver Sunset consisting of more than 50,000 stones brought there by Latvians in memory of their departed loved ones and their kin. But the water canal encircling the amphitheatre symbolizes the nation’s tears, and the hope that the horrible past events will never repeat.

The Garden of Destiny is a unique memorial taking shape in Koknese, on an isle in river Daugava, created through donations of Latvian people and the support of thousands of Latvians and enterprises at home and abroad. The beauty of the nature of Koknese peninsula and river Daugava converges with the landscape architecture of Japanese landscape artist Shunmyo Masuno, shaping the friendship avenue, the amphitheatre engulfed by the oak-tree stand, the multifunctional public building, the digital exposition Liktens gāte, the Big Mountain, and the observation terrace.
