Latvijas Pasts releases a cover to commemorate Pēteris Feders, a Latvian architect and founder of the Art Academy

Latvijas Pasts has released a special cover in honour of Pēteris Feders (1868–1936), a renowned Latvian architect and artist who was one of the founders of the Art Academy of Latvia, one of the creators of the Riga Brethren Cemetery memorial ensemble and one of the designers of a number of railway stations in Latvia. The special cancellation of the cover is scheduled to take place in Riga post office No. 50 located in the shopping centre Origo, 2 Stacijas laukums, Riga from 10 AM to 7 PM on the 29th of July 2018.

The print run of the new cover is 1,000 copies, and it features a portrait of P.Feders, as well as a photo dated 1926 of Babīte railway station designed by him and a fragment of the station’s layout. The cover and the special postmark have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

P.Feders was born in Kazan, Russia on the 29th July 1868. He was a full member of the Art Academy of St. Petersburg, the capital of the Russian Empire at that time, and one of the founders of the Art Academy of Latvia. He directed the reconstruction of the city of Jelgava and was the author and architect of the fundamental idea of the architectural spatial organisation of the Riga Brethren Cemetery.

The prominent architect developed the designs of the passenger buildings of Asari, Babīte, Bēne, Dobele, Gulbene, Saldus and Sigulda railway stations. Outside Latvia, he worked not only in St. Petersburg, but also in Warsaw.

The special cover and postmark dedicated to P.Feders can be viewed here.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 10th of August 2018.
