Latvijas Pasts releases the stamp Curonian Kings – a special collector’s edition with a silver coin of the Bank of Latvia

Latvijas Pasts releases the stamp Curonian Kings, which has a single design with the silver collector’s coin minted by the Bank of Latvia. The stamp is issued both as a separate philatelic release and as part of a special joint release with the Bank of Latvia, which also includes a special cover and a silver coin dedicated to Curonian Kings. The first day cancellation of the stamps is scheduled to take place in Riga post office No. 10 at 41/43 Elizabetes Street, Riga from 9 AM to 7 PM on Friday, the 7th of September 2018.

The silver collector’s coin and the stamp Curonian Kings share a single design, featuring the coat of arms of Ķoniņciems, as well as a woman and a man dressed in the stylised folk costume of Kurzeme (Courland). The print run of the stamp is 30,000 copies, and its face value is € 5.00, making it suitable for paying for various kinds of letter-post items with a weight grade above 500 grams.

In turn, the joint release, which contains a cover of an unconventional size with the first day postmark, accompanied by the stamp and the silver collector’s coin of the Bank of Latvia, has the print run of only 300 copies. The stamp, the cover, the postmark and the collector’s coin have been designed by the artist Arvīds Priedīte.

Curonian Kings were the descendants of Curonian noblemen and natives of Courland living in seven free villages of Ķoniņciems, Kalējciems, Pliķu ciems, Ziemeļciems in Turlava Parish, Dragūnciems in Rumba Parish, Viesalgciems in Snēpele Parish and Sausgaļciems in Padure Parish. As vassals they were granted land by the Livonian Order for their military service in the troops and also received various privileges, such as exemptions from socage and duties. Curonian Kings often fulfilled the duties of post riders.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 24th of September.
