A stamp block dedicated to medal winners of the XXIII Olympic Winter Games is released with the start of the bobsleigh season

With the start of the new season of competitions in winter sports, Latvijas Pasts in cooperation with the Latvian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (LBSF) looks back at the greatest sports achievements of the past period and issues a stamp block in honour of the bronze medal winners of the XXIII Olympic Winter Games: bobsledders Oskars Melbārdis and Jānis Strenga. The first day cancellation of the stamp block is scheduled to take place in Riga post office No. 50 located in the shopping centre Origo, 2 Stacijas laukums, from 8 AM to 7 PM on the 1st of November 2018. The stamp will also be officially presented at the LBSF press conference for the season’s opening at the Inchcape Motors Latvia BMW showroom at 64a Dārzciema Street, Riga at 2 PM on the same day.

The print run of the new stamp block dedicated to Latvian medal winners of the XXIII Olympic Winter Games is 7,000 copies, and the print run of the first day cover is 1,000 copies. The face value of the stamp is € 3.06, which is suitable for sending a letter weighing over 2 kilograms within Latvia or a letter weighing over 250 grams to other countries of the world.

The stamp features both medal winners O.Melbārdis and J.Strenga in a moment of their award-winning Olympic ride captured on photo, and the photo of the stamp block portrays the two athletes with their medals. The stamp block and the cover have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

The Latvian leading bobsleigh pilot O.Melbārdis and the pusher J.Strenga won the bronze medal in the doubles competition during the PyeongChang Winter Olympics on the 19th February 2018, and it was the first and only medal for Latvia in these games.

The presentation of the new stamp block is included on the agenda of the LBSF press conference for the season’s opening, which will see the participation of the athletes, the Federation’s management and representatives of Latvijas Pasts.

The XXIII Olympic Winter Games took place in the South Korean county of PyeongChang from the 9th to the 25th of February 2018 and they brought together almost 3,000 athletes from 92 countries of the world who were awarded 102 sets of medals in 15 winter sports disciplines. Latvia was represented by 34 athletes competing in nine sports disciplines.

In its stamps Latvijas Pasts traditionally highlights sports achievements which are the most important for the country, including the Olympic Games awards and their winners.
