Stamps of 2019: well-known series and original new releases with a print run of over 6 million copies

In 2019 Latvijas Pasts plans to make 20 stamp releases – a total of 25 postage stamps and one stamp block with the overall print run of more than six million copies. The new stamps will be both included in the already familiar series and designed as special original releases. Two stamps of 2019 will be created in cooperation with the Latvian parents’ organisation Mammamuntetiem.lv. Three stamp releases will be on a self-adhesive base, and one stamp will feature a unique irregular shape design that was first created in honour of the centenary of Latvia in 2018.

The first stamps of 2019 will be issued on 18 January and they will be the traditional standard stamps in the series Coats of Arms of Latvian Towns and Municipalities, featuring the coats of arms of Tukums, Aizpute and Rucava. Among the already popular series, which will be supplemented by new stamps this year, we should mention Outstanding Latvian Artists with the stamp dedicated to the painter Johann Walter (Jānis Valters), Unique Exhibits of Latvian Museum of Natural History, Lighthouses of Latvia and Latvian Architecture on the subject of Water Towers.

In 2019 stamps in the pan-European single series will also be issued, this year with ornithology motifs, and the History of Latvian Automobile Construction series will be continued in collaboration with Riga Motor Museum. Stamps will also be dedicated to the centenary of the University of Latvia and the Art Academy of Latvia, the 250th anniversary of the birth of the writer, publicist and promoter of enlightenment ideas Garlieb Merkel (Garlībs Merķelis) and the 150th anniversary of the artist Rihards Zariņš.

For the first time, Latvijas Pasts will issue stamps in collaboration with the Latvian parents’ organisation Mammamuntetiem.lv. There will be two stamps, one of which will be released in honour of Mother’s Day and the other will be dedicated to the Father’s Day tradition.

Three philatelic releases of 2019 are planned on a self-adhesive base: the new releases in the series Coats of Arms of Latvian Towns and Municipalities, the thematic Summer Solstice stamp Līgo wreath and the stamps in Christmas series. Moreover, Līgo wreath will be designed in an irregular shape and will be the second irregularly shaped stamp issued by Latvijas Pasts: the first stamp of this kind was released by Latvijas Pasts in 2018 in honour of the centenary of the state.

In 2018 Latvijas Pasts released 26 stamps and three stamp blocks, with their total print run amounting to 6.6 million copies. All stamps issued in 2018 can be viewed here. The decisions regarding the postage stamp issue plan are made by the special Stamp Issue Committee.
