Latvijas Pasts releases the second irregularly shaped stamp – this time designed as a wreath of summer flowers

In anticipation of the Summer Solstice, Latvijas Pasts releases an irregularly shaped stamp for the second time in its history. The stamp has a self-adhesive base and is shaped as a wreath of summer flowers, which is traditional for the Līgo (Midsummer) celebrations. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place in Riga post office No. 10 located at 41/43 Elizabetes Street, from 8 AM to 8 PM on the 13th of June 2019.

With the approach of the Summer Solstice celebrations, Latvijas Pasts issues a special irregularly shaped stamp Līgo Wreath. The face value of the stamp is €0.50, which corresponds to the cost of sending an ordinary Class B letter within Latvia. Unlike most stamps, the stamp Līgo Wreath has a self-adhesive base.

The print run of the stamp is 500,000 copies. The release of the stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1,000 copies. The stamp and the cover have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva,

The new stamp is distinguished by its irregular shape: it is designed as a wreath, which is woven from various flowers found in Latvian meadows. Wreaths are one of the most characteristic and essential elements of the Summer Solstice celebrations, traditionally worn on the head on Līgo evening.

Irregularly shaped stamps are considered a rarity in the world of philately, and Līgo Wreath is already the second stamp of this kind released by Latvijas Pasts. The first stamp was issued in 2018, celebrating the centenary of Latvia.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 27th of June.
