Latvijas Pasts releases three stamps to mark the 100th anniversary of the Latvian army

In anticipation of the centenary of the Latvian army, Latvijas Pasts has issued three new stamps depicting the military equipment of the Latvian National Armed Forces for the territorial defence of the land, the sea and the air. The first day cancellation of the stamps is scheduled to take place in Ādaži post office at 11 Gaujas Street, from 9 AM to 6 PM on the 10th of July 2019, the birthday of the Latvian army.

The face value of each new stamp is € 0.50, which corresponds to the cost of sending an ordinary Class B letter within Latvia, while the print run of each individual stamp amounts to 100,000 copies. The release of the stamps is accompanied by a special cover with a print run of 1,000 copies. The new philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja.

The stamps depict the National Armed Forces’ combat vehicle reconnaissance (tracked) or CVR (T), staff and support vessel Virsaitis and helicopter Mi-17.

The Latvian Army was established on 10 July 1919 by combining the Independent Brigade with the Northern Latvia Brigade. A few months later, on the 11th of November, the newly established army liberated Riga from Bermont’s troops.

The main task of the Latvian National Armed Forces is the implementation of national security interests, ensuring the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Latvia, and regional and global stability, while caring for peace and well-being in the country, as well as performing other unforeseen tasks in emergency situations.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 26th of July.
