Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp depicting a protected and a very special bird for Latvia – the lesser spotted eagle
Latvijas Pasts in cooperation with Latvian Fund for Nature has issued a new stamp, which features a specially protected bird - the lesser spotted eagle. This bird is special for Latvia, as approximately one-fifth of the entire population of lesser spotted eagles in the world nests specifically in our country. The first day cancellation of the new stamp is scheduled to take place on the 16th of August 2019 in Riga post office No.10 at Elizabetes iela 41/43, from 8 AM to 8 PM. The presentation of the stamp with the participation of the representatives of Latvijas Pasts and the Latvian Fund for Nature is going to be held at the same venue at 11 AM.

The print run of the stamp Lesser Spotted Eagle is 50,000 copies and its face value is €0.78, which corresponds to the cost of sending a regular Class A letter to any European Union country. The stamp is accompanied by the issue of a special cover with a print run of 1000 copies. The author of the stamp, the cover and the first day postmark is the artist Ģirts Grīva.

"In its philatelic issues, Latvijas Pasts has always been highlighting the riches of nature, history, and culture of Latvia to take pride in and to remind of not only to ourselves but to the rest of the world, because stamps on our postage in particular travel to innumerable countries. The stamp with the lesser spotted eagle will be yet another messenger from Latvia, repeating the tale about this special bird which must be protected," stresses the director of Stamp and Philately Department of Latvijas Pasts, Edmunds Bebrišs.

But the director of Latvian Fund for Nature Ģirts Strazdiņš explains: "The lesser spotted eagle is a bird Latvia can be proud of not only on European but also the global scale, as we have about one-fifth of the world lesser spotted eagle population nesting here. This is why we hope that this stamp will serve as a beautiful reminder of the lesser spotted eagle as the pride of Latvia and of our common duty to care and to protect this species. Latvian Fund for Nature is truly happy about the cooperation with Latvijas Pasts in spreading the word about the protected species of Latvia in our own country and around the world."

The lesser spotted eagle (Clanga pomarina) is a medium-sized bird of prey, whose wingspan can reach 150 centimetres. It has long and broad wings with jagged tips and it features brown plumage. The lesser spotted eagle is one of the smallest in the eagle family; it reaches adulthood at the age of three or four and can live up to 20 years. The lesser spotted eagle is a very special bird for Latvia, because our country is a crucial centre of this protected bird population.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 20th of August.
