Latvijas Pasts releases a stamp in honour of the 100th anniversary of the Latvian Academy of Art

Latvijas Pasts has released a new stamp in honour of the 100th anniversary of the Latvian Academy of Art. The stamp displays the magnificent building of the Academy built in the neo gothic style.  The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place on the day of foundation of the Academy, on the 20th August 2019 at Riga Post Office No. 10 at Elizabetes iela 41/43, from 8 AM to 8 PM.

The print run of the new stamp is 30,000 copies and its face value is € 0.85, which corresponds to the cost of sending a regular Class A letter to any country in the world outside the European Union. Also a special envelope in the print run of 1000 copies has been released along with the stamp. Both the stamp and the envelope have been designed by the artist Ludis Danilāns.

The Latvian Academy of Arts was founded on the 20th August 1919 thanks to the idea of its first Rector, the outstanding Latvian Artist Vilhelms Purvītis (1872–1945) to create a higher art education establishment in Latvia. The Academy has become an art institution with a regional and European importance and aims to provide high quality and competitive higher education and contribute to comprehensive development of the art, design and science.

The building of the Latvian Academy of Art featured on the stamp was built in the beginning of the 20th century for the needs of the business school of Riga Stock Exchange. The Academy of Arts has been located in this building since 1940. It was built according to the design developed by the architect Wilhelm Ludwig Nikolai Bockslaff (1858–1945) and is among the most important monuments of architecture and art in Riga. The building stands out thanks to its gorgeous architecture of the neo gothic shapes and interior designs featuring also the motifs of Art Nouveau.

The stamp and the envelope Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijai – 100 (Latvian Academy of Art – 100) can be viewed here.

The next philatelic release is scheduled for the 8th September.
