Latvijas Pasts releases a special cover dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Latvia’s Customs Service

Latvijas Pasts has released a cover to mark the centenary of the establishment of Latvia’s Customs Service. The special cancellation of the cover is scheduled to take place in Riga post office No. 10 at 41/43 Elizabetes Street from 8 AM to 8 PM on the 2nd of December 2019.

The print run of the cover Latvia’s Customs – 100 is 1,000 copies. The cover and the special postmark have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

The visual design of the cover features a postcard from the collection of the National Library of Latvia, which depicts the building of Riga customs on the bank of the Daugava River, built between 1875 and 1877 according to the design by Nikolay Trusov, an architect from St. Petersburg. This building, whose present-day address is 1a Krišjāņa Valdemāra Street, was home to Riga Customs during the first period of the Free State of Latvia, and from 1991 to the end of 2006 it accommodated the Customs Administration of the State Revenue Service (SRS).

The 1st December 1919 is considered the day of establishment of Latvia’s Customs Service. This is the day when the Customs Department, the central customs office of the Latvian State, was founded under the Ministry of Trade and Industry. The restored Customs Department of the Republic of Latvia was established on the 3rd of July 1990, while the actual formation of the administrative structure of Latvia’s Customs began on the 21st of August 1991, after the full restoration of the sovereignty of the Republic of Latvia.

On the 28th of November 1991 the Customs Department became a structural division of the Ministry of Finance, and on the 28th of November 1993 it was incorporated into the newly formed SRS.
