Stamps dedicated to the centenary of the Latvian Army secure a convincing victory in the competition held by Latvijas Pasts and Delfi

In the competition for the most beautiful postage stamps of 2019 held by Latvijas Pasts in collaboration with the news portal Delfi, the first three places have been convincingly secured by the stamps related to the centenary of the Latvian Army. The stamp dedicated to the Latvian National Armed Forces (NAF) Navy ranks first with 8,392 votes, the second place with 7,575 votes goes to the stamp featuring the centenary of the Latvian NAF Staff Battalion and the stamp in honour of the Latvian NAF Land Forces is in the third place with 3,930 votes. Meanwhile, the fourth place of honour is taken by the stamp Līgo Wreath of a completely different theme, released in an irregular shape and reminiscent of the Solstice tradition.

The competition Gada pastmarka (Stamp of the Year) organised by Latvijas Pasts and the news portal Delfi for the fourth time was held from the 3rd to the 16th of February 2020, and a record 83,927 votes have been cast for the participating stamps. This figure represents an increase of several times from the number of the votes (10,167) cast for the most beautiful stamp of 2018.

The first three places have been earned by the stamps dedicated to the centenary of the Latvian Army, and all of these stamps have been designed by the artist Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja. The stamp released in honour of the Latvian NAF Navy and featuring the staff and support vessel Virsaitis ranks first with an overwhelming majority of votes.

The second-highest number of votes has been cast for the stamp in honour of the centenary of the Latvian NAF Staff Battalion; it features soldiers of the NAF Staff Battalion Honour Guard and an element of their uniform: a sleeve formation patch. The stamp which ranks third is dedicated to the Latvian NAF Land Forces and depicts combat vehicle reconnaissance (tracked) or CVR (T).

The fourth place with 3,523 votes goes to the unique irregularly shaped stamp Līgo Wreath released in the spirit of the Summer Solstice on a self-adhesive base and designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

The stamp released in honour of the centenary of Latvia, which is also the first stamp of irregular shape issued by Latvijas Pasts and designed as the outline of the Latvian state, received the winner’s laurels in the competition Stamp of the Year of 2018. In turn, a total of 9,774 votes were cast in the competition of 2017 and Western Yellow Wagtail, a stamp in the Latvian Birds series, was recognised as the most favourite stamp.
