A stamp dedicated to chemist Emīlija Gudriniece will be presented at the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry of Riga Technical University
Latvijas Pasts issues a new postage stamp and a cover in honour of Emīlija Gudriniece (1920–2004), a merited chemistry scientist and sports enthusiast, who would turn 100 this year. The first day cancellation of the stamp is scheduled to take place at the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry of Riga Technical University (RTU) at 3/7 Paula Valdena Street, Riga, from 10 AM to 5 PM on the 18th of September 2020. The official presentation of the stamp will be held in the same place at 12:30 PM and it will see the participation of the representatives of the management of Latvijas Pasts, Riga Technical University and the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS).

To mark the 100th anniversary of Emīlija Gudriniece, Latvijas Pasts releases a new stamp with a print run of 50,000 copies and a special cover with a print run of 1,000 copies. The face value of the stamp is € 1.00, which corresponds to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class up to 20 grams within Latvia.

The visual design of the stamp and the cover created by the artist of the philatelic releases Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja is based on the materials from RTU collections: the chemist’s personal records and the 1951 photo portrait. The philatelic releases also feature a chemical structure: a nitrofuran series compound – the antibacterial agent furacillin or Nitrofurazone, whose synthesis technology was developed by E. Gudriniece and which is still produced by Olainfarm AS.

Professor E. Gudriniece (1920–2004) was a professor at RTU and an academician at LAS – she was an outstanding chemist and university educator, and the founder and long-term head of the Department of Organic Synthesis and Biotechnology at RTU (1963–1989). E. Gudriniece’s lifelong scientific work was dedicated to the synthesis of heterocycles, research of their biological activity, as well as the possibilities of practical application of vegetable oils in the production of biodiesel. With her work, talent and enthusiasm, the scientist has left lasting values, for which she received a number of recognitions and excellence awards. In addition to her scientific work, the chemist was also keen on motorcycling and won the title of Latvian champion in motorcycling.
