Latvijas Pasts dedicates the stamp released on the 100th anniversary of the Dailes Theatre to its founder and director Eduards Smiļģis
On the 19th of November 2020, which is the 100th anniversary of the Dailes Theatre, Latvijas Pasts is releasing a new postage stamp and a cover in honour of Eduards Smiļģis (1886–1966), founder of the theatre and its legendary director. The new stamp will first be available for purchase at the post offices of the largest cities, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/. Those interested in the first day cancellation options are invited to contact us by writing to the e-mail address: filatelija@pasts.lv

The stamp in honour of the 100th anniversary of the Dailes Theatre has a print run of 50,000 copies, while the print run of the special cover is 1,500 copies. The face value of the stamp is € 1.00, which corresponds to the postage of letter-post items in the weight class up to 20 grams within Latvia. The new philatelic releases have been designed by the artist Ģirts Grīva.

The visual design of the stamp features the portrait of director E. Smiļģis, taken by photographer Gunārs Binde in 1965, six months before E. Smiļģis passed away. The cover depicts the Dailes Theatre.

On the day of release of the stamp, the 19th of November 2020, the Dailes Theatre will be celebrating its 100th anniversary – during the existence of the theatre, the brightest artists of their time have always worked there. One of the most outstanding personalities of the Dailes Theatre is its founder E. Smiļģis, who was known for doing things on a grand scale and for his imagination without borders. Together with his contemporaries, he created a new theatre model with an innovative stage layout and scenery, as well as a specially developed speech and movement of actors.

E. Smiļģis also worked as a director at the Dailes Theatre and was a long-term creative director of the theatre, as well as played powerful and heart-felt roles: he performed the part of temperamental, romantic characters.

Taking into consideration that public events, including the first day stamp cancellation at post offices, are currently suspended due to security requirements, stamp collectors and those interested in philately are invited to contact the Stamp and Philately Department of Latvijas Pasts regarding stamp cancellation options by writing to the e-mail address: filatelija@pasts.lv.

The stamp and the cover Dailes Theatre 100 – Eduards Smiļģis will first be available for purchase in Riga post office No. 10 at 14/43 Elizabetes Street, Riga post office No. 50 in the shopping centre Origo at 2 Stacijas laukums, post centre Sakta at 32 Brīvības bulvāris, Riga, as well as in the e-shop of Latvijas Pasts https://veikals.pasts.lv/.
